(so far the potentials i've got are phasmid and walking leaf)

here it's identified as a katydid!  mom is sure it's not...

ahhh...broad-winged katydid!  turns out moms are human, too.

ok, mystery apparently solved, family found.
who needs the Linnaean classification when you got the common name?
