Feeding America
Feeding America Give A Meal Holiday Drive
Aqaula and Family

Dear Michael,

When Aquala lost her job, she went back to school to pursue a career in healthcare. But between school fees, rent and bills, Aquala found herself struggling to find the money to pay for groceries to feed herself and her two children.

You can help make a difference for families like Aquala's who struggle to put food on the table this holiday season. For every $1 you give, Bank of America will match your gift with $2! Together we can make 3 times the difference in the fight against hunger.

"It feels like you had nothing in your stomach, you feel exhausted after a while if you're still hungry," says Aquala's 10-year-old daughter, Destiny. One in six Americans may not know where to find their next meal this holiday season, but you can help.

When you Give a Meal you are doing more than providing food. You are sending joy and hope to hard-working adults, children and seniors struggling with hunger.

Sincerely,

Johanna Vetter

Good News

My dear family in Christ:

I realize the urge is to curse the electorate and Electoral College, get drunk, and groan about how terrible the next 4 years will be here in the USofA.  Certainly plenty of people are doing all these things, and perhaps a few of them even feel better as a result.  But we must rise above this temptation.

Our kingdom is not of this world, and ultimately neither are we.  Our future is brighter than we can possibly imagine, and our King more glorious than any human ear hath heard or eye hath seen.

Even from an earthly perspective, we still are fortunate to live in the greatest country there is, where the bulk of our Constitutional freedoms are intact, and most will remain so despite the election results.  Let us continue to praise God for all that He has given us, and remember in our hearts and prayers all those Christian brothers and sisters who are not so "lucky" -- yet consider themselves far more blessed than we tend to, despite (and indeed, often because of) their chains.

There are countless Bible verses i could cite in support of this message, but i leave it in your hands to locate them.  I also strongly encourage you to regularly read a devotional, such as Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest" and Charles Spurgeon's "Morning and Evening."  The former (and other, more contemporary daily devotions) can be found free at odb.org, just pause your cursor over the word Devotions near the top of the page.

May our Lord continue to richly bless and instruct you all, as He faithfully has me,

michael august schmidt

Spybot S+D 2.0.10 RC2 disappoints

I dunno bout you all, but i haven't really cared for any Spybot Search + Destroy release since 1.6.2, i think it was.
Seems like it's been well over a year, and several betas or release candidates, since then.
(Granted, this is only the 3rd i've tried in all this time. . .)

The updating worked fine, as did the immunization, and i'm not one to gripe about a major interface overhaul.
Haven't done a "search and destroy" scan yet, largely because the (new?) rootkit scan was deluged with false positives!
I don't know what else to call a bunch of PICTURES that i myself took and uploaded!!!

The Quick Scan brought up only the folder seen at bottom of this pic, then the Deep Scan brought up all the items seen
in this list and a WHOLE lot more (most of which were also pictures that i myself took an uploaded).
My understanding of rootkits is admittedly very limited. . .but is it even possible to get one into a jpg?!?!

Oh, one other annoyance: Even if you go into Settings and opt NOT to have any parts of the program running at startup
or on schedule, and then manually kill each process in Process Explorer, and FURTHER STILL set each process to
"Manual" in the Microsoft Services Console ("msc" in the Run command window or Search), you may still find the
stupid processes loading themselves!  Turns out the ONLY WAY to keep this from happening (apart from, i'm hoping,
setting each process to "Disabled" in MSC) is from within the program itself (somewhere other than Settings)!
And of course they don't bother to make it evident on that screen that this is the situation.

Ad-Aware is another formerly-great program, which i haven't used in many years.  I saw recently that they now have
bundled anti-virus in with their anti-malware. . .i don't even want to think about trying that out.
Hard to believe that i spent years running Spybot and Ad-Aware exclusively, neither memory-resident mind you,
just updating and running each of them alternately, every week or two.  Oh, and AVG of course, which WAS mem-res
(always running).

Thank goodness for Avast, and the occasional use of SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes!

Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done...

Why no denomination will survive the homosexuality crisis

Brief and interesting take -- but the word "intact" should have been added at/to (not sure which is grammatically correct) the end of the title.

I read the first few dozen comments, so i dunno how interesting any of the others may or may not be.  :)

Fwd: Giveaway of the Day for August 15th

This is a handy all-in-one utility, if you don't already have one you're happy with, or suspect you can do better.
Remember, it's free TODAY ONLY!  You must download, install and activate (follow instructions in "readme") this before Midnight Pacific time!

As with all such programs, you should ALWAYS back up your registry before letting it delete anything, and just to be safe create a system restore point before running the program (but after installing/activating it).
Once you have taken these steps, it will be impossible for anything you do with the program to screw up your system irreparably -- so go ahead and tinker around!  :)

Other good free all-in-ones include:
Glary Utilities
Advanced System Care (This is one that i have left running at all times, aka "at startup")
Toolwiz Care (Also worth having in startup, but not at the same time as ASC!  Like AV programs,
you should NEVER have two all-in-ones running at the same time!)

Again, so long as you create a system restore point and backup the registry (both very easy to do, just ask if you need help) before running any of these programs, you won't even need to go through the Settings or Options and select what you want it to do or exclude/include (tho i personally still like to do this) -- anything it deletes erroneously or any other change it makes can be UNDONE.

Long as i've mentioned all of the above, i might as well add some other free programs i really like and install on most of the personal computers i work on (as many of you already know):
Utilities:
*Ccleaner, Defraggler, Recuva and Speccy (i run Ccleaner 2-3x/wk, Defraggler roughly every 5 days)
Process Explorer (far more useful and informative version of Task Manager)
Process Lasso (keep programs from using too much of your RAM and CPU)
WinDirStat (neat graphical representation of how much space all your files take up!)

AV & Anti-malware:
Avast! (let it autoupdate daily and scan weekly)
SpywareBlaster (update every week or 2 and let it do its thing, it uses NO system resources)
WinPatrol (requires some patience and practice initially, but well worth it)
SuperAntiSpyware (update and run every week or 2, depending upon your level of concern/paranoia)

Updaters:
FileHippo update checker (i run this once or twice a week)
SUMo (you may want to get the lite version, which i've not tried, to avoid their added junk)
I've tried and am still trying out a LOT of updaters, b/c none of them are close to perfect, and some of them just have very annoying user interfaces.

As with all free software, pay close attention when you are installing and be sure to disable any toolbars or additional programs (i.e. Relevant Knowledge) it suggests!

Of course, ALL these programs and MANY MORE can be downloaded from CNET.  Most of them are also available from FileHippo, but for some reason its update checker fails to notice about 1/4 of my programs!
Many of them also have PORTABLE versions, which are sweet for a thumbdrive that you take with you to work on other people's PCs.  ;)

If you are interested, i have LOTS of other free programs i use to varying degrees; i'd be happy to share those as well, just let me know what sorta stuff you're looking for (backup, cloud storage, duplicate file finders, partition, media players, photo editing, hardware info viewers, FF add-ons, etc.).

Sorry if any of this is old news to you, i've sent this to lots of people, mostly non-techie types.  ;)
Also sorry if you are a Mac user . . . because most of these programs (and me) can't help you!

*if you love Ccleaner as much as i do, you will DEFINITELY want to expand its cleaning power manifold,
by downloading and running (it doesn't even need to be installed!) CCEnhancer!

Dear Arizona:

Because you are either incompetent or too stupid to care for yourself, we must step in to take care of you.  We don't like your "anti-immigrant" legislation, nor do we care to fulfill our responsibility to secure your border with another nation.  Also, we don't owe you OR the American people ANY explanation for what we knew about "Fast and Furious" or when we knew it.  We are above reproach, and above the laws of the U.S. Constitution that we swore to uphold.  If you disagree with us, we will call you names like "racist" and "anti-immigrant."  We're with the federal government, so you'd BETTER cooperate!

Contemptuously,
Barack Obama & Eric Holder

P.S.  Let your 56 siblings know that we don't care about "states' rights" or limitations on federal authority and power-grabs.  And don't give us any of that "checks and balances" nonsense -- the Supreme Court agrees you WILL pay for health care whether you have any or not, and your Congress hasn't even passed a budget in like THREE YEARS!

You just KNOW a webpage is "Sincerely Yours,"

When it uses that sign-off with the name "Director of Customer Service".

Practical, too, because when the person holding this position is replaced the webmaster doesn't even need to bother changing anything.

Even people I know and have MET are almost certainly NOT sincerely mine, despite their use of that closing in a correspondence.
How deluded or demented would I have to be, to believe that a complete stranger--whose name isn't even given to me--is sincerely mine?
(If the latter, perhaps I would devote myself to finding out that stranger's name and location, then track him/her down and insist that he/she
make him/herself available to me all hours of the day, to serve my whims.  Sorta like the Galactic Cowboys tune "If I Were a Killer", only replace
the word "Killer" with "Stalker".  :)

*SIGH*
Now i'm bummed cuz i had no idea the Cowboys did a reunion in '09!  They prolly weren't near Milwaukee anyway...and i should just be glad i saw 'em at all (opening for Dream Theater @ Summerfest in '93 or '94).  Time to go listen to Space in Your Face!  :)

Obama slaps veterans & their families in the face, so he can shine for 15 minutes

Two separate and unrelated accounts of what happened at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day

Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 5:06 AM
Subject: Vietnam Veterans denied Access...

I am currently in Washington DC and witnessed the following. I saw this first hand and I bet you won't hear about this from the Liberal media...

Vietnam veterans and the families of Vietnam veterans killed in action whose names are etched on the Wall were denied access to their memorial today, of all days, Memorial Day. The Vietnam Memorial was shutdown, cleared and secured for approximately 5 hours prior to Obama, his cronies and hand picked veterans for a 15 minute appearance by Obama. It's obvious it was all for show. After all, this is an election year.

Hundreds if not thousands of Vietnam veterans and families of Vietnam veterans killed in Vietnam stood in disbelief as Secret Service, Park Police, Washington DC Police, etc., blocked all access to the Vietnam Memorial and kept everyone approximately 100 yards away from their memorial for the first time in the history of the Memorial so Obama could get some photos of him at the Wall. Veterans in uniforms stood in the heat angered as Obama made them wait. It was a photo op at their expense and families of those killed in Vietnam.

As I stated, I was there and witnessed all of this. Many veterans and others flipped Obama the finger as his motorcade drove past. I didn't honor him with a finger salute because I was busy holding up my 3'x5' Don't Tread on Me Flag as his motorcade drove past.

Subject: Today at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial...The Wall

Today as I usually do each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, I joined my fellow Soldiers I served with in Vietnam to lay a wreath for our fallen at the Vietnam Veterans Wall. We always gather at 0903 hours at the Three Soldier's Monument. There we meet for a while and talk, see how everyone is doing, if anyone needs help, introduce any new guys from out of town who are visiting, new guys who are joining us for the first time, introduce any members of our family or friends who have come with us, always followed by a few remarks about fellow members of the Blackhorse Regiment who had passed since we had last gathered and then we welcome each other home. Today after walking across Memorial Bridge and rounding the Lincoln Memorial I saw our guys all gathering outside of a barricade around the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. When I joined them I found out to my total disbelief that we could not enter. No veterans allowed. The reason was that Obama was coming there to make a speech and the area was closed to everyone except special people with special passes until his speech was over 5 hours later. I was stunned. Thousands of Vietnam veterans gathering like us with wreaths in hand to recognize our fallen and turned away so that a politician could give a speech. Most of us had been there when Reagan spoke, Bush 41 and 43 had spoken, even Clinton, although most of us turned our backs on him in one of the largest, silent protests ever...seen by everyone...stinging in its impact...totally unreported by the media...but even then, we were not turned away. Today we were. I saw where in a poll where Obama is over 25 points behind Romney with Vets...if they all had seen what we experienced today and knew what had transpired, the spread would be much wider. I doubt if this will even be reported in the media. But, it should. This was not our day...it was their day...the boys who lost their lives. But it was their brothers day to come and touch their names on the Wall and remember them. It was also Decoration Day...the day we recognize those who gave all for all of us. It was not about our narcissist president and his attempt to appeal to the Vietnam Vets for votes. Shut out, we met next to a hot dog stand under a shade tree and held our semi-annual ritual for our fallen. Later that day, one of our men stayed behind and saw to it that the wreath was placed at that section of the Wall when we lost the most during the war. We won every battle in that war and were denied victory. We had to listen to an illiterate world say that we had lost our war. Our troops suffered more degradation, insult, hatred, and disgust from our countrymen than all other US troops from all wars combined. We came home to a country that didn't want us...and to many countrymen who loathed us...but yet we persevered. Today...was just one more cut...but it was a cut that will not heal any time soon.

WOW.

Click on the last image, and be amazed and awed by the sheer majesty and beauty of just one tiny part of one tiny planet of one [tiny?] solar system of one [average-sized?] galaxy of God's immeasurably immense creation.
Sure makes a person feel small, but hugely blessed and grateful.

you may find this amusing

Those of you with private insurance have undoubtedly experienced some hassles and headaches.
Rest assured, public insurance (BadgerCare/Medicaid in my case) can be every bit as bad.
I paid the annual fee of $60 online 3/21, and immediately received a confirmation email.
My online bank statement confirmed this confirmation. . .it was all very confirming.

But then a couple weeks later i received notification from the state that my renewal was DENIED;
the reason given was that i had failed to pay said annual fee.  So i called up the toll-free number,
and after waiting a while (forced to listen to the same instrumental song over and over) i got to
speak to a human being.  First he requested the aforementioned confirmation number, which i was
able to provide with all due haste.  Then i waited for a minute or so while he did something at his
computer.  Then he said i would need to send in a copy of my bank statement, showing the $60
charge.  Wanting to just get off the phone and get this %$#@ taken care of, i didn't bother to question
why on Earth this would be needed, i politely bade him farewell and complied with the request.
I believe that was Wednesday, April 11th.  Of course, my anti-depressant prescription was due to be
picked up at the pharmacy a couple days later, and i had only enough to get through Saturday or Sunday.
(And the regular price for the script is in the neighborhood of $250 -- about $4 per 150mg Effexor.)

So Monday i went to the pharmacy drive-thru with improbable and unmerited optimism; naturally,
The State had not yet received/processed/whatever the copy of my bank statement i'd sent in.
So i came home and called them up again, then got on Walgreens' website pharmacy chat. . .

Hi! My name is Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician. How may I help you?
Customer: Hi. I was just at the drive-through a few minutes ago. My name is Michael A Schmidt.
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: I'm happy to assist you.
Customer: My Rx was coming up at regular price because my insurance was denied/expired: BadgerCare.
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: I'll be happy to check on it for you. May I have the prescription number?
Customer: I'm on the phone with the people @ BadgerCare and they're telling me it should be active and functional.
Customer: 0819054-04556
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: Thank you.
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: Please hold for one moment while I research the information to assist you.
Customer: Of course. Thank you.
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: I apologize but I just resubmitted the prescription to Badger and we are still receiving a rejection.
Customer: Ack. OK, they said it may take 24 hours for their system to update or whatever. In the meantime, because I took the last of my pills yesterday, could I stop in for an emergency supply?
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: You could purchase some out of pocket but you may want to check with Badger first to see if they would reimburse you for the cost.
Customer: I'm pretty sure they wouldn't -- or if they did, considering how long their renewal process is taking (I paid them online 3/21), they would probably cut a check to my grandchildren. And I don't even have a child yet! :)
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: I apologize for that. How many would you like to pick up?
Customer: I'm sure 4 would suffice, that would get me through tomorrow. Then if they STILL haven't got their system updated, I'll call my congresspeople and every other public servant I can get a hold of!
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: Ok, I will make a note for the pharmacist and expect that will be ready in about an hour. Also we will continue to attempt billing.
Customer: I thank my Lord and Saviour for the patience and pacifism with which he's blessed me...these days it's no wonder when somebody goes bonkers and shoots up a gov't agency or some such.
Customer: That's excellent, I'll be there in about an hour then.
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: You're welcome and be well. Thank you for chatting with us and have a great day!
Customer: Is there any way you could email me or give an automated call if/when the insurance does go through as it should?
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: Yes, you will also most likely get a call in the next couple of hours letting you know that it has been delayed since I just resubmitted it.
Customer: OK, great. Thank you so much for your assistance.
Ashley C., Pharmacy Technician: You're welcome and have a good day.
Thank you for using InstantService. You may now close this window.
[i actually typed some more stuff, which i'm sure was witty and quite unlike anything those Pharm. Techs ever see in chat, but once they close it out on their end that stuff just vanishes.  posterity's loss, i s'pose.]

It gets even worse, because not only did i have to pay $16+ for those 4 pills, but when i called The State 24 hours later (when their system was to have been updated), i spoke to a different representative who apparently knew a bit more about the system, telling me it actually takes "up to 72 hours" to update!

Just when the entire situation appeared to have reached the absolute worst point, this rep called back to tell me that he was very sorry because he'd forgotten it was possible to go into the system and manually change the date of service renewal (to a past date, for instance a day or two prior), and he did just that while on the phone.

In all my years, this was the only instance i can recall of things TRULY being "darkest just before the dawn."  I'm a man who has been awake and near a window MANY TIMES in the hours and minutes leading up to the dawn, and NEVER has that period of time been NEARLY as dark as the hours and minutes directly opposite the dawn (when the sun is directly opposite the point on Earth where i am located, i.e. the middle of the night).  Maybe Southeastern Wisconsin is one of those places on the planet which is somehow an exception to the stupid expression.  But i suspect it's more likely that some fool created that phrase in an effort to make people feel better when they are suffering.  It has never provided me with an iota of comfort, but always provided me with an immeasurable quantity of annoyance, given its obvious vacancy of reason.

(Little surprise then, that i chose this email address and the following signature:)

Advanced SystemCare 5 Pro

Use it on 3 PCs (possibly 4 or 5!)
$12.97 (This seems to be their usual sale offer, for a single PC license.)
One year license...if you don't renew, pretty sure it just reverts to the free version.

The program is much more beneficial on XP machines, as you would probably expect.
But even if you just have one of those, you can still play with it on a couple Win7 systems too!  :)
(Or give somebody a year of ASC Pro as a gift.)

Here's some reviews:

I can't vouch for any of the sites/reviewers, but the program has done right by me;
I leave it running all the time on my XP machine, and run it occasionally on the Win7 one.
